Foundation for the Support of the United Nations

History of FSUN

In alignment with its mandate to help the United Nations implement its programmes both at the grass roots and decision-making level, The Foundation for the United Nations (FSUN) has adopted its main focus from 2000 to 2015 to be the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), transitioning to the historic Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) from 2016 to 2030. 

1988

November

Foundation for the Support of the United Nations
Established as The Foundation for the Support of the United Nations (FSUN) USA corporation by Former United Nations Ambassador Richard Petrie, Senior Japanese Diplomat and United Nations Administrator Mr. Yasushi Akashi, and Member of the House of Representatives Ichiro Watanabe. Founder of Asics, Mr. Kihachiro Onitsuka became the first president of the organization. Started business with support from the world student attending UN conference.

 

1989

Tax exempted from New York State.

 

1990

February

Tax exempted from the US federal government.

August

Inauguration ceremony at Tokyo · Imperial Hotel. Began fundraising activities to support the United Nations.

Discuss with the United Nations Association President of the United States

 

1991

January

Apply for NGO (non-governmental organization) certification to UN Headquarters.

Certified by the United Nations Economic and Social Council as "NGO with General Consultative Status" by UN NGO Jury Committee. General Consultative Status, the highest status within the system, is reserved for large international NGOs whose area of work covers most of the issues on the agenda of UN ECOSOC and its subsidiary bodies. Currently, there are only 144 NGOs who are in General Consultative Status with UN ECOSOC, from 3,536 NGOs with Consultative Status.
